Week 5: Gestalt

This advertisement for Radiant Gym definitely makes use of the Gestalt principle. When you look at the white image of the person, and when you read the words inside, it looks as though the figure is expanding. This fits with the theme of the poster: obesity, and illustrates the Gestalt principle of continuation. The shape isn't exactly there, but you see it anyway. Though it's hard to tell what part of the figure you are imagining, this illustrates the figure/ground phenomenon because it is separating the figure from the rest of the page. The rule of simplicity is also being followed because there is only one image on the entire poster. Thus, this image stands out, especially because the colors are black and white and pop out against one another. After seeing this poster, people will hopefully forever associate Radiant Gym with the figure on the page. Since Radiant Gym is listed in white on the bottom right corner, it also stands out because the rest of the poster is black. Gestalt is at work with this poster and I think it does a very effective job of portraying its message!
