Project #2: Poster Design - Jordan Clifford

I chose to do a poster for Orange Pulse Dance Troupe’s 7th annual charity showcase. It’s a performance they do in late March, early April with all proceeds going to benefit the charity they are supporting for the year. OPDT is both a club sport and a recognized student organization. They are a non-audition group, making them all-inclusive. I wanted my poster to portray that.

This is an organization I am part of so I knew a lot about them from my involvement last year. Since they are not-for-profit they do not have much money, so I had to keep my design simple. Their audience is usually friends and family members of the performers, but their advertisements go up here on campus. I wanted my poster to be an easy read and to convey the fact that it is a charity showcase benefiting the Jonathan Cancer Fund. Being that it was a dance troupe I decided to use a ballet bar as my visual. I went to Flanagan Gymnasium, took a picture of the dance studio, live traced it and converted it to live paint. I chose to use the headline “Just Dance” because it’s a play of off Nike’s “just do it” as well as Lady Gaga’s song “Just Dance.” I thought that would resonate with the younger crowd here on campus and would draw them into my design.

I chose to use an orange color, C: 0, M: 50, Y: 100, K: 0, because it is both in the name and it’s a warm color, easily drawing the viewer’s eye through my design. I brought the color down into my information to create a gestalt and highlight the more important facts.

The typeface I chose was Abadi MT Condensed. I used a combination of both Extra Bold and Light to create some contrast. After going through Extensis Suitcase I felt it was the font that best fit my design.

Overall I was relatively happy with the way it turned out.
