Alyssa Hillman:Project Posting

I used a Rescue Mission event for the non-profit poster project because I know the organization and have a passion for what they are trying to do, to change the community through one man at a time. The “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” event is one that is meant to bring awareness to homelessness and poverty in the Syracuse area. This walk is also meant to bring hope to the Rescue Mission men through fundraising from the participants. It is this image of struggle and hope that I wished to show the audience on my poster.

Through my use of color (stark blacks/grays to red), I was hoping to insinuate the contrast of colors and draw attention to the Rescue Mission logo (which is a popular cite downtown) and the key words such as “Step” and “Walk”. I also used the heading or catch phrase “Take more than a stand…Take a step” which is supposed to imply the walk-a-ton as more than stopping homelessness, but fighting against it. The mile marker reflects the Rescue Mission’s mission statement of providing hope and is also supposed to resemble the Christian Cross (the Rescue Mission is a Christian organization). The city skyline was needed to show that the walk was going on downtown and was also a symbol for that there is still “Hope” left in the city.

The typefaces that were used were picked because of their stability and overall strength appearance. At first, my main font was a handwritten style but the poster lacked professionalism. The san serif in the first section of the headline (MS Reference Sans Serif) and the serif in the second part (Georgia) were the two fonts I used. I wanted a contrast but to still have it pleasing to the eye. I only used two different fonts but intermixed them throughout the poster except the mile marker when I used Palatino with wide kerning and capital letters.
