Design Strategy:
I designed a poster showcasing the Syracuse Chapter of the American Red Cross’ second annual S.A.F.E. Fair. The aim of the event is to provide young children and adults from the Syracuse Near West End area with key safety tips regarding Halloween trick-o-treating, as well as general safety and hygiene tips. The Near West End area of Syracuse is a predominantly low-income, Hispanic area, so my client wanted me to make sure that key information, such as the fact that it would be free for all community members and that health and hygiene services would be provided, were stressed. My client also wanted the poster to be composed of visuals that would draw community members in and excite them for the upcoming Halloween holiday.
In order to address my design problem, I used the pen tool to trace all of the main visuals (cross, ghosts, pumpkin) on the poster. Since I am no world-renowned artist, I found it useful to trace my visuals rather than draw them free hand or scan actual items. I wanted my design to have an organic, spooky, almost child-like feel to it, so I chose to leave the ghosts in their slightly squiggly outlines, transformed them by making them transparent, and added interior shadows on each individual caricature. I placed the large cross behind the ghosts in order to include the logo of the American Red Cross in the dominant visual. The Ghost Town Halloween typeface served as the perfect complement to all of the visual design aspects of the poster. The quintessential colors associated with Halloween are black and orange, so they were my immediate color choices.
