Elena Carroll: Poster Project Rationale

Design Strategy:

The event I chose is the Humane Associations, “Adopt-A-Dog Month,” which I chose to help spread the word, and reach a larger amount of people to take advantage of. The Humane Association helps protect both animals and children from cruelty, but this specific event only focuses on the rescued shelter dogs. I wanted the poster to be an obvious animation, and look playful and fun, to almost represent the fun a new dog would bring to a family. The poster also plays off of a Halloween theme, seeing as the month is in October. Halloween is a holiday for children, and the poster energetic and mostly targeted towards children. Families with children are the prime adopters of dogs, so I wanted the poster to appear charming to adults, and draw in children. I also used a mixture of colors to make the poster stand out, and encourage readers to look over the entire poster.

To solve the problem, I used a phrase to draw in the reader, and kept the poster simple yet attention-grabbing. I used one picture, which I drew and live traced, of a dog in a Halloween costume, and used fun fonts and colors to surround the dog and connect the poster. The Humane Association offers help to all those in need, and rescues animals and people who are suffering. I wanted the poster to emphasize the need to adopt a shelter dog, specifically, and help the Hume Association to continue their work. I used a tag line at the top of the poster, in hopes it would draw in the reader, and then carry their eye down to the logo at the bottom of the poster. I want the poster to be perceived as joyful, and a potential way to add enjoyment to life with a dog while feeling good about helping a non-profit organization. It is a poster to raise awareness, and stimulate interest in all those potentially interested in adopting a dog. I want the poster to be seen as an edgy yet adorable way to attract attention, while appealing to human emotion.
