The event I picked was a film screening and discussion with the activists that starred in “At the Top of my Voice,” a documentary about fighting for democracy and human rights in Georgia. First I brainstormed headline ideas. Because viewing a movie relates to eyes, and “opening your eyes” to something indicates increased awareness, I came up with the headline “Open your eyes to injustice in Georgia.” Next I came up with symbols that would quickly communicate the main idea of the event and how they could relate. I chose a fist representing standing up against injustice, an eye for increasing awareness, and a filmstrip to indicate it was a film screening. I chose red, black, and white as the colors because they are bold and are often associated with revolution. I chose the stencil font because of its association with revolution as well, and I chose American typewriter because of its clerical and factual essence. It goes with the idea of reporting and documentary. My audience is college students so I tried to keep the symbols simple yet eye-catching and engaging, hopefully encouraging students to look into how everything interacts with the event the poster is presenting.
