The old Dairy Queen logo uses the gestalt principle of closure. The red on the outside is enclosing the company's letters of DQ. We can clearly make out the letters of DQ and identify the company with this red boundary. At the same time, when we look away from the DQ letters at the red, the red area resembles lips. It is shaped like lips and also has the red color of lips. This works perfectly for Dairy Queen, as most of their customers are going to be eating ice cream or other food. Overall, the Dairy Queen logo is pretty simple and easily readable with its use of gestalt closure.
