Bad Album Art: Taylor Miller

I remember the first time I had seen this album cover posted online, and I couldn't believe an established graphic designer actually designed this. The text is on her face, which right away is not appealing, but the biggest problem is the tracking on the word "Battlefield." If I didn't have prior knowledge that this was the title of the album, I would have had no idea what it was named. You can't even make it out slightly. Luckily her record label got wind of the negative reaction and quickly changed it, but this cover art will still go down as one of the worst-designed covers of the last decade.

  1. I agree with you on that comment. "Battlefield" has very tight spacing and is practically impossible to read. On the other hand, the signature shows personality and has a glamourous edge. I do like the colors they used (red and white) to contrast not only each other but to also complement Jordin's complexion. I may be reading too much into this, but it has some good qualities, but ultimately, they made the right decision to change the cover art.

  2. Good points, Taylor and Alyssa. The spacing between letters is called kerning, and I think if they had made that a little more natural here, the typeface for "Battlefield" would have worked nicely with the script typeface used for her name. The colors do contrast nicely, but readability is always a key goal to have in mind.
