
I think the creative technique about joining for harmony is a really interesting point. It allows for more creativity without going too far. It breaks up the flow on the page and can be done with text and or an image. It allows horizontal aspects to break up the vertical columns.
In this magazine layout, the grids show a good use of the joining for harmony. There are two vertical columns and then a horizontal image and text that break it up. This then allows for three columns on the bottom. It draws the reader's eye, but does not distract them. Horizontal text is not seen often so it being short and in color is really effective.
