Grid: Michael Boren

The pull-quote in this Sports Illustrated magazine layout represents breaking boundaries by breaking the regular visual eye flow. The pull-quote stretches through the two columns used in the body paragraphs, marking a difference from the main story. However, the pull-quote is still placed between the outside boundaries of the two columns, and I think that makes it noticeable and easy to read at the same time. Readers can pause and look at the quote without completely being thrown off from the body paragraphs. The use of red for the headline and the pull-quote helps connect the quote to the main character of the story: Mark Martin. I think that's what the designer was trying to get across. The designer was trying to get an important quote to stand out that Martin said himself, which emphasizes HIS pull-quote over the rest of the body paragraphs.
