The Creative Column Technique that interested me most was 3. Utilizing Angles. I though this simple idea really creates interest in the design with a simple change in a picture or illustration. Too often Designs are too "up and down". It gets boring! For my magazine article i am definitely going to try to spice up the design with tilting pictures and breaking boundaries with my pull texts.
The image above shows a magazine layout design gone wrong! There are too many techniques being used without making them simultaneous. They have a pull quote that breaks boundary, they have an illustration areas "seeping" into text, angling text,and large columns. Although i know that chaos can be creative and unexpected, but in this case i don't think the designer when far enough to have the chaos work for the design. I think the base of the design is smart, however i would make the pink illustration bigger, the columns smaller, the pull text would be within the boundary, and keep the angled text. With these changes i think the design could work.
