Grids Post

The Creative Column technique that I liked most was the "Escaping Boundaries" technique. I like this because it definitely sets a magazine layout apart from another. Lots of magazines set grids and strictly stick to them. It's appealing to the eye to see some differences from page to page, and a layout that doesn't align solely with the grid is a great way to accomplish that. A text box that spans a grid and a half, or a pull quote that is placed directly inbetween two columns is a good way to "escape the boundaries" of typical magazine layouts.
The "Twilight" spread above is a perfect example of a spread that breaks the boundaries of the grid. First of all, all of the boxes are different sizes. This is interesting to look at, and also keeps the spread from becoming monotonous. The varying picture sizes accomplish this as well. The intro to the entire article takes up a grid and a half. This is useful, because it shows that that intro text is more important than the normal text that takes up just one grid, as in point #2.
