Late Post: Week 10: Grids -Jordan Clifford

After reading through the Smashing Magazine article on Grid-based design, I realized that a lot of what they were getting at was about breaking boundaries and using grids not as a statistic or solid structure but more of a guide to create an "out of the box" design. They literally are telling you to design outside of a box, to break your grids and play with your design. This all falls back on the old adage that rules were meant to be broken.

The first creative column technique, "Embracing Disharmony," caught my eye - this technique was about adding interest and creating a break in design to draw a reader or viewer into what you have created. It was specifically stated: "chaos is more interesting than order." This is so true. People seem to constantly be striving for the perfect something - trying their best to reach perfection but it's the things that are imperfect that are the most valuable. Because when it is imperfect it is unique. There is no mess up that is the same. No paint splatter falls in the exact same way each time.

Below is a magazine layout I found on Google that I thought was a good example of breaking grids. I like the headlines along the top and the way they incorporated angles, color, and of course chaos. But sometimes chaos can get too crazy. Like I said, I like the layout and design concept but I wish they would have straightened out the text columns. Having the text as jagged as it is can be somewhat off putting. At least it's a little tough for me to sort out. Good idea though and I think it fits the vans, warped tour, skater-edgy vibe well.
