Jen Brotman- Interface Design

Design Strategy: When coming up with a design for my website, I wanted to create something that could easily be repeated for multiple links, but that allowed variation on each page. The event I chose is called Anchor Splash and Delta Gamma hosts the event to benefit Service for Sight. I wanted to include an anchor and the idea of splashing on each page. I used a six-column grid on my page to help me create containers. This allowed me to put the anchor and one container in one sixth, a call to action and a large container in the middle and then a picture and a donate box in the last sixth. These containers could be easily repeated and filled with information and pictures. I put my navigation bar across the top and used splashing to indicate action. I also wanted to use creative navigation links so I related them to swimming and splashing. The event is all about the girls who are hosting it and the pool events so I wanted to make a very visual website so there is a picture on each page. Not for profit events are all about the donations so my call to action “stop blindness before it starts” is on each page along with a link to donate now.

Choice of Typeface: For my main typeface I used Myriad Pro Regular. I wanted a legible modern sans serif to convey a fun event, not a traditional and boring one. I used the Myriad Pro Bold variation for my navigation bar to remain consistent but give it more emphasis and to create hierarchy on the page. The call to action is in the typeface Baskerville Cyrillic LT Std Inclined. I chose this typeface because it worked with the Myriad Pro and it works for a call to action, but not a demanding one, more like a please help us. Lastly, I used ITC Cheltenham Std Bold for Anchor Splash 2010 because I was looking for a big bold serif font to stand out as the name of the event. I chose to left align all of my body text to create strong readability and for everything to flow smoothly.

Colors: Delta Gamma’s colors are bronze, pink and blue so I wanted to incorporate the pink and blue. I used the blue in the background because it is the cooler color allowing the yellow anchor and pink navigation bar and white containers to stand out. I pulled the yellow from the previous year’s event shirts for the anchor. I did not want to put too much type in color so I just used color for the name of the event and the rest of the type is in black.

Pictures: I used pictures from events where Delta Gamma or our letters are showing. This is important to show the audience who we are. I also wanted to show action in the pool. Girls in Delta Gamma took all of the pictures (names are listed on markup next to each picture).
