Another one of my favorite websites, I think that the CNN International News website does a great job of creating visual hierarchy on it website. The website uses three main rows and several columns within its design. The first thing you notice is the header bar with the CNN logo, which is outlined in red. The color usage makes it stand out and easily leads the reader to each respective section of the website. Following the header, two main news stories (one in print form, one multimedia/video piece) are posted. Next to that is an advertisement for the various news shows that CNN International broadcasts daily. The placing and sizing of the main news stories alerts readers to their importance. Below the main news story (print), various other news stories that are coming in from all around the world are placed, usually organized by continent and the time it was posted. Below the main video/multimedia piece, other pieces of the same nature but covering different subjects are posted. Below the advertisement, blog pieces and information regarding top stories and CNNS various shows are posted.
I don't think CNN could have set this up any more perfect. Everything is clear and easy to find. Visual hierarchy is followed on the site to a T. Everything is outlined neatly, which makes it very easy for readers to find exactly what they need. I absolutely love how they use dominant sizing( news stories, videos, advertisements, etc) to lead the reader to other pieces like the dominant news stories they first see on the website. I think their usage of color is subtle but effective, especially in first directing the reader to the different options the site offers.
